Agence universitaire de la francophonie, Montreal, Quebec
L’agence universitaire de la francophonie (AUF) is a multilateral organization that fosters cooperation and solidarity among francophone universities and contributes to the development of higher education and research. AUF has 659 members consisting of public and private universities, research centres, and institutes and networks connected to higher education. Its members are drawn from institutions in countries that are members of l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie and other institutions that wish to be associated with the francophone world. AUF’s mission is to promote cooperation among its members and to promote the development of higher education and research. AWBCwill collaborate with AUF to run joint placements with institutions that are members of AUF.
The Association for Higher Education and Development is a Canadian NGO the mission of which is:
I. To contribute towards development efforts in Ethiopia by mobilizing, coordinating and channeling the necessary resources and relevant expertise to Ethiopian higher academic institutions.
II. To assist in the capacity building of the Addis Ababa University, Jimma University and Gandar University by responding to academic, infrastructure and resource needs.
III. To mobilize Ethiopians in the Diaspora and facilitate their contributions to and role in development undertakings in higher academic institutions in Ethiopia.
IV. To facilitate partnership between Ethiopian academic institutions and governmental, non-governmental and international organizations.
The Association of Registrars of the Universities of Canada was created in 1964 in response to the professional needs of student administrative services personnel in universities. In 1974 the Association’s name was changed to the Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada to reflect the increasing role of the colleges in this professional field and in the activities of the Association.
Today ARUCC has approximately 182 member institutions from all regions of Canada. Personnel representing the universities, community colleges and cegeps include registrars, admission directors, student records managers, student services managers and other personnel in the areas of student advisement and counselling, student financial aid and student placement. ARUCC is an Associate Member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CASE). ARUCC is a regional association of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO).
Many Canadian nurses go abroad to work or volunteer in less developed countries every year and contribute to thousands of humanitarian causes; yet despite common values, interest and intentions, we are not well-connected with each other. For lack of a structure to bring us together, we have worked in relative isolation. In 2007, CAIN was founded because we recognized this. We believe that by uniting to share our stories, plan and learn together, we can enhance the quality of our work. By sharing access to preparatory resources, contacts in global health, capacity building and education, and allying ourselves as a group with humanitarian organizations, educational institutions and nursing associations, we can augment the efficiency and effectiveness of our projects.
Canadian Society for International Health, Ottawa, Ontario
The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) is a national non-governmental organization that works domestically and internationally to reduce global health inequities and strengthen health systems. Founded in 1977, CSIH attempts to realize its goals through the dedication of its membership and staff. CSIH is governed by a Board of Directors.
CSIH members share a common interest and commitment to global health, global health research, and international development. Our members include individuals and organizations representing a broad spectrum of experience in various disciplines. Members contribute considerable time and energy to CSIH’s many activities, programs and projects, and connects CSIH to other organizations in Canada and abroad. Through the engagement of its members and partners, CSIH endeavors to bring together various communities engaged in global health in order to promote a collective agenda.
CURAC is a federation of about 35 Canadian college and university retiree organizations on some sixty campuses in every province of Canada. Several of the CURAC member organizations are themselves federations of post-secondary retiree associations: the college retiree federations in BC and Ontario, and a federation within the Quebec university system. CURAC represents approximately twenty thousand college and university retirees across Canada.
The goals of CURAC include facilitating communication among college and university retirees; promoting the exchange of ideas on new and evolving models and best practices of retiree benefits and health care; and the support and encouragement of retirees’ continuing professional careers—whether faculty, management, or staff.
Division of Higher Education, UNESCO
Within the education sector, UNESCO promotes higher education in our increasingly knowledge-based society in which education is a key factor in cultural, economic and political development, and is also a capacity-builder from the inside and a promoter of human rights and sustainable development, democracy, peace and justice.
The Division of Higher Education supports the establishment of sustainable higher education by:
• Building and strengthening capacities at the national level,
• Providing global leadership in teacher training and related policy issues,
• Developing policy options for an educational response to the challenges of globalization through research and knowledge sharing,
• Assisting Member states in planning and developing sustainable policies in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in lifelong education.
AWBC will work in close cooperation with UNESCO’s Division on Higher Education notably through its UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme. This Programme was conceived as a tool to help and support research, training and programme development in higher education. The actions of UNESCO/UNITWIN Programme consist in building university networks and encouraging inter-university cooperation through transfer of knowledge and the exchange of professors/administrators/researchers/students across borders. Today 640 UNESCO Chairs and 62 UNITWIN Networks are established within the UNITWIN Programme, involving over 760 institutions in 125 countries.

Institute for Developing-Area Studies, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Development research and teaching has never been as strong at McGill as it is today, and this is reflected in the renewed vibrancy of the Institute for Developing-Area Studies. With dozens of tenure-stream professors, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working on issues relating to development, development studies has become a core strength of the Faculty of Arts, and an increasingly prominent feature of McGill. This renewed interest in development research and teaching builds on the strong foundation that was laid with the establishment of IDAS in 1963 and has allowed the Institute to become one of a few select North American centers for development research and teaching, generating impressive levels of original research, establishing new relations with the international development community, and training future generations of researchers, teachers, policymakers and development practitioners.
Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
Memorial University is the only university in the province and the largest in the region with about 18,000 students engaged in full and part-time studies at undergraduate and graduate levels. The university employs 950 full-time faculty (and 850 sessional instructors) and 2300 administrative and support staff. Memorial University College was founded in 1925 and granted university status in 1949. It operates from the main campus and the Marine Institute in St. John’s, Grenfell College in Corner Brook and Harlow, England. The university is known for its strong research that takes advantage of its mid-North Atlantic location.
The Memorial University Pensioners Association (MUNPA) is a very active retiree association with about 1500 members and is a member of the College and University Retiree Associations of Canada (CURAC/ARUCC).
